Just a shot in the dark - could this be related to commit:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=b0d5d10f41a0f1cd839408dd94427f2db3553bca

I don't think that made it into 3.16.x.
