Accessing SPDIF device won't work unless you set up some controls properly beforehand. In most cases, secondary (or later) devices are _not_ supposed to work by the direct access. Many of them are designed for special use. I'd recommend to list up only the card names, and try to use either "default:X" or "plughw:X" (the former is preferred, but not available in the older version).
