Summary: alsamixer crashes system when snd-ioctl32 is loaded
Description:
alsamixer crashes system hard when snd-ioctl32 is loaded.
System still responds to some sysrq commands (sync remount boot show) -
sysrq (term killall) has no effect.
There's no chance to do any other keyboard input. No logs, no traps, no
oops. Machine still responds to ping,(even port 22 stays open) but login
via ssh is not possible.
alsamixer, of course, is useless without the ioctl32 wrapper loaded - but
does not crash the system then.
So I suspect a problem in the ioctl32 wrapper.

The other problem seems to be related to pcm_hw_params. I've got a patch
against alsa-driver.1.0.7 which changes pcm_hw_params to
DEFINE_ALSA_IOCTL_BIG(pcm_hw_params) like in the 2.6.9 kernel sources...
I'm guessing this was recently changed, and reverting back to the old way
causes it to work on sparc...

Hmm... it would make sense to me to change the userspace struct to pack
rather than the otherway around because we are using 2 different compilers
for kernel and userspace code, and those different compilers may padd
differently. The latest patch doesn't address that issue (and I'm leaving
it up to the alsa devs)...
The latest patch applies cleanly against alsa-drier-1.0.7, and it produces
working modules with linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r14 and vanilla linux-2.6.9. You
need to first apply the patch in bug
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=658 to compile sparc
modules with
the alsa-driver package.
This final patch is now being used by Gentoo.
sjoerd: Thanks for all your help =)
