Summary: no capture with M-Audio Revolution 7.1
Description:
I am trying to make capture on M-Audio Revolution 7.1 - to no avail so
far.

The OS is Mandriva 10.2, but I have the same problem with the latest
KNOPPIX,
MEPIS, Kubuntu.

On all the above mentioned distribution playback works out of the box,
but
capture is dead.

I do not think there is a sign that capture at all is possible/at all
exists
 - see detailed information below.

I think this message:

http://www.mail-archive.com/alsa-user@lists.sourceforge.net/msg09998.html

is also related to the issue.

I didn't find any specific explicit mentioning of capture working with
the
card - just general "the card is supported", "made it work", etc.

Did anyone manage to make capture work with the card ? If yes, how to do
this ?

I'm giving the issue "block" severity because the card was specifically
bougth
to perform capture at 96KHz sampling rate.

Thanks in advance,
  Sergei,

Detailed information follows.

The board has no capture volume control, so you get always the full volume.
IIRC, the capture worked at the last time I tested.
How did you test the capture?

I am trying to answer the "How did you test the capture?" question:

I have a Pinnacle TV capture card is connected to Line input of the
M-Audio cound card.

I also have a microphone connected to Mic input of the M-Audio cound
card.

Both the TV card and the microphone worked fine with SB Live 5.1 - out of
the box.

As I incidentally discovered
(https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1106)
the card is able of capturing sound at least under some circumstances.

In layman terms I would like to be able to hear sound from my TV card and
from my microphone
the way it used to be with SB Live 5.1.

Do I have, by any chance, to change settings of routing switches in
'alsamixer' or using 'amixer' ?

If yes, what should the settings be ?

Thanks,
  Sergei.

Maybe my previous question does not contain enough details.

Here is the rephrased question:

Running 'amixer' with this command line

amixer cget numid=<number>

, where <number is in 5..12 range, I see output like this:

"
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw---,values=1,items=5
  ; Item https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=0 'PCM Out'
  ; Item https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1 'H/W In 0'
  ; Item https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=2 'H/W In 1'
  ; Item https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3 'IEC958 In L'
  ; Item https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4 'IEC958 In R'
  : values=0
".

Can any of these controls be related to enabling capture ?

Thanks,
  Sergei.

No, there is no capture control at all on this board, indeed. At least,
the hardware spec I got tells nothing about the capture controls. No gain
control, no input selection.
