Hi!

I have got a similar problem. My computer is a Latitude Cpi-R 400GT.

The machine hangs not immediately after inserting the nm-nm256 module, but
it freezes always when accessing the soundcard (by invoking alsamixer).

The similarity is, that I have already tried to activate/deactivate the
old "latitude_workaround"-thing, but this doesn't help.

The older OSS-driver works for me, too.

I'm using the latest stable driver (alsa-driver-1.0.5.tar.bz2) compiled
over a linux 2.4.24-kernel.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 fridolin - 08-13-04 12:46
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've also tried alsa-driver-1.0.5a, but it shows the same crashing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 fridolin - 08-13-04 15:17
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With 1.0.6rc2, the driver doesn't crash any more.

I'm sorry that I haven't tried out this before, but when compiling on a
slow machine and after tens of reboots, one day goes by very soon.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 aaronkaplan - 08-14-04 20:04
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I upgraded to kernel 2.6.7 and I no longer have a problem with this driver.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 tiwai - 08-19-04 19:18
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok now I close this. Reopen if still something gets wrong.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 aaronkaplan - 09-03-05 22:43
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I upgraded to FC4 and the problem is back again. When I modprobe
snd_nm256, sometimes it works, but more than half the time it hangs the
system.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 rlrevell - 09-04-05 00:33
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The ALSA version shipped with FC4 is old and quite buggy. Try the latest
ALSA version (1.0.10-rc1) or ALSA CVS.

1.0.10rc3 has a fix for this laptop. Give it a try.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 aaronkaplan - 11-12-05 17:58
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, it still hangs with 1.0.10rc3.

During my testing, the first modprobe snd-nm256 after booting went ok, but
then rmmod and modprobe again caused it to hang. Not sure if this is by
chance, but it happened three boots in a row.

tiwai on LKML:

"This might not conver all Dell models. In such a case, try
reset_workaround2=1. See the section of nm256 in
ALSA-Configuration.txt for details."

Try the various reset_workaround options amd report which (if any) help.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 aaronkaplan - 01-22-06 02:00
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With alsa 1.0.11rc2, modprobe snd_nm256 hangs the machine with all four
possible combinations of reset_workaround and reset_workaround_2.

This bug should be fixed in CVS, can you please test it?
