one observation according to your log files:
node2 (interface 10.1.1.13) never gets any of its own originator messages back
(rebroadcasted) from node6. Despite node2 receives OGMs from node6. I assume
that node6 simply can not hear node2 (and maybe also others) and therefore
node6 can not rebroadcast OGMs from node2 (which is necessary for the
bidirectional link check). One reason for that might be, that the netmask and
broadcast address of the (alias) interfaces batman is using on node2 and
node6 are not identical. can you check that?
Another problem you have indicated is that node6 dissapears after a while from
the routing table at node2. Well, actually the real problem is, that node6
should never appear at the routing table at node2.
This is of course confusing but normally not a problem. Its just that during
the first life-time-seconds of a batman instances links to nighboring nodes
may falsely be assumed as bidirectional (even if they are unidirectional as
in your case). We shall fix that someday:-)

according to the log file node2 behaves correct (despite the thing that node2
generates a route to node6 within the first two seconds). At some point in
time node2 purges node6 from its routing table because it could never
validate the link between interface 10.1.1.1 and 10.1.1.33 as a bidirectional
link. Can you generate another set of log files at node2 and node6
simultaneously? So that we can identify whether node2 simply does not hear or
node6 never re-broadcasts any originator messages (OGMs) send by node2.

Hmm... actually another thing but:
I see that on node2 the netmask and broadcast addresses for the two interfaces
used by batman are different. I've never tried nor considered it that way -
might work - but it is (imho) not the intended setup. With batman you
can/should use the same netmask (and broadcast addresses) for all interfaces
participating in the batman mesh. Otherwise you can get topology
fractionation with which the protocol can not deal with automatically.
Perhaps you can try to give ALL interfaces a 255.255.255.0 netmask and a
10.255.255.255 broadcast address?

I have disabled eth0.0 (batman only on interface wl0) on node2 and
same behavior: after a while route to node6 disappear.
I make another test with only 3 nodes: node2 with one interface (wl0),
node6 and node3
node2 (10.1.1.1) ------ node6 (10.1.1.33)

After 2 minutes with "batmand -g 0 -r 2 -d 1 wl0" on all 3 nodes:

So after ca 110 seconds everything seems perfect, none of the route entries is about to be purged
and (not like in your previous log file) node 2 received a total of 84 self-initiated
(and re-broadcest from node6) back OGMs from node6.

Thats strange, can you specify more precisely in which sense it dissapears?
Is it just the route (route -n) or does it also dissapear from the debug level
(batmand -c -d 1 -b)?

This, indeed looks like an
almost perfect link from node2 (10.1.1.1) -> node6 (10.1.1.33) and
a rather lossy link from node6 (10.1.1.33) -> node2 (10.1.1.1)
Perhaps the same reason as in your first log file from node 2.
However, the lines given above do not reveal any further secrets.
If the link is bidirectional using a grep on the traced node2-leve-4-debug like:
grep "NB: 10.1.1.33, IF: wl0 10.1.1.1 (from OG: 10.1.1.1," node2
should show you the moments from node2's point of view when it
was identified bidirectional. This should happen somhow regularly.
Also FYI, there is a quite useful pearl script which can help in analyzing
debug-level-4 outputs available at:

Maybe - many wlan cards have problems with the ad-hoc mode. Iam often
experiencing problems with atheros cards which out of the sudden
cease sending for a while.
But then, the problem should be the same for olsr. If you want to verify that,
you can easily run both protocols in parallel (and use alias interfaces for batman)
and then always have a way to instantly compare between the two protocols.

I'm testing batmand 0.2 in two hardware-different nodes:
6.17.0.1/8 is a Fonera running its standard firmware
6.17.190.172/8 is a Fonera running Kamikaze
From kamikaze(d) node I see:

but the same node, issuing the command "batmand -c -d 1 -b" tells me "No
batman nodes in range".
I'm afraid of the message "Orginator timeout: originator 6.17.0.1" in the
above lines... is this the problem?

Hello,
Before a batman configures a host route towards another node (and
batmand -c -d 1 -b should tell you about all succesfull configured routes) it
must learn about the existence of the other node via a bidirectional link.
Thus actually two things are checked:
1. the link (via which it received a message from the new node) must be
bidirectional.
2. Receive an originator message from the new node (OGM).
In your case the node 6.17.190.172 (A) has not yet confirmed the first issue.
It received an OGM from node 6.17.0.1 (B) but not via a validated
bidirectional link (not yet).
In order to consider a link bidirectional, node A checks if it has
successfully received one of its self-initiated OGMs back from node B.
I suppose this has not happened so fare but (if the link between A and B is
bidirectionsl) should happen within the next seconds. The line:

which you are concerned about indicates exactly this fact. Recevied messages
from another node are only valid if (besides other checks) they have been
received via a bidirectional link. This one was not so its not valid.
Otherwise last_valid should indicate the timestamp of the last validly
recevied OGM from node B.
Another line:

Indicates that node A rebroadcasts node Bs OGM anyway but with the
unidirectional flag (UDF) set which tells all other neighbors except node B
to ignore the message. Just node B now has the possibility to consider node A
as a bidirectional neighbor because node A has successfully rebroadcasted its
own OGM. Does that make sense?
