one more idea: Do you clamp the MSS on the batman gateway client ?
It is somehow related to the MTU problem.
You can try this iptables command:
iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -j
TCPMSS --clamp-mss-to-pmtu
