they can be used in mesh but as you noticed the wifi cards are not able to open 
multiple wifi networks at the same time. If you want to offer managed networks 
for the laptops you need to find other solutions. Either you use Atheros based 
devices that can open multiple networks or you connect 2 devices (e.g. 
wrt54gl) via Ethernet (one opens the managed network and the other meshes in 
ad-hoc mode).
