These +'s seems very wrong, the --prefix should take care of that.

This is due to you override the prefix during configure.
Did the ./configure --prefix stuff not work? I usually only specify
--prefix=/usr, --sysconfdir=/etc and -localstatedir=/var.
then do make DESTDIR=$(STAGING_DIR) install.
