Or still in awk:

    ifaces=$(awk '/^auto/ { split($2, iface, ":"); ifaces[iface[1]]=1; }
                  END { for(i in ifaces) { printf( "%s\n", i); } }
                 ' \
                 /etc/network/interfaces
            )
