Actually for the first patch I think it is better to replace
$(TARGET_DIR): $(BUILD_DIR)/.root
with
$(TARGET_DIR): rootfs-dirs
Moving this to the pkg-generic infrastructure is better done in a follow-up
patch. IMHO.
