Interesting... probably some hw issue, anyway

could you please send me (not to the list) strace and that command with
debug information? IOW

cryptsetup -y luksFormat /dev/sdb1 --debug
strace cryptsetup -y luksFormat /dev/sdb1

please do not use valuable password, it will be visible in the second output.
