I can reproduce the problem with normal blender, subdivs applied and textured mode. However it doesn't seem related to this patch or Pierre's since even rotating around the cube is very slow. I noticed that enabling GLSL mode speeds up rendering and picking remains slow, but I don't think the problem is in this GL_SELECT implementation.
