The only way to restore leads me via killing the Xserver. Maybe some xrandr
command? It needs to refresh its resolution list, though.
There may be some influence by the A/V receiver in the chain, but as I post=

on Feb 15, the effect is also there with my UHD monitor in the office,
connected by DisplayPort, and having nothing in between.
