This is quite weird. I measure speed of starting The Sims 3 by sound only.
Screen in completely black (bug #26114) so I can not see anything.

Anyway with commit:
ffd625d4aaf145eb28fc76617e95ffc3fdfd54cc
radeon: don't attempt to use alternate blit formats for depth buffers

I start The Sims 3, hear something, then 15seconds of silence, then 500ms of
sound, 15seconds of silence, and so on.

It may be good start for debugging low The Sims 3 speed when we kill bug #26114
some day.

Note: classic r600 driver has been abandoned.
Please use r600g (gallium driver) instead.

Is this still an issue with a newer driver/kernel?

The classic r600 driver has been abandoned long ago.
It was replaced by the Gallium driver r600g.

If you have issues with r600g please file a new bug report with component
Drivers/Gallium/r600
