In the past this could be reliably avoided by pinning the power setting to min or max, but DPM changes prevented that fix from working. Now that I know this: echo high > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level (looks similar to the one that used to work a few kernels earlier?) I can avoid the problem again, but of course at the cost of power consumption. The underlying issue might be the same timing problem.
