FWIW the reason why you see it in your Ubuntu setup is most likely rooted in the `/etc/skel/.bashrc` file that contains this:

	# don't put duplicate lines or lines starting with space in the history.
	# See bash(1) for more options
	HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth
