Hi Ralf

I just realized that, unfortunately, your original message is far beyond
the message size limit on vger (100000 bytes according to [1]).  So
nobody outside of the Cc list has seen it...

Note for other readers: the glossary (also mentioned a few times below)

We're using it to keep things consistent.

come up with is "Stufe", but if you can find something that evokes the
mental image of the "sides" of a merge, that would be better IMO.

You're translating 'our/their version' -> unsere/ihre Version.  Taken
just by itself I think it would be okay or at worst mildly confusing
(how about "unsere/ihre Seite [der Zusammenführung]"?).

However, in the wider context it is actually dangerous, because you are
overloading the (German) Version here.  It already means 'commit'!

exists, so it's not "new branch" in the sense of the previous group of
options, which apply to the _to-be-created_ branch.

Umm, no?  Second-guessing means doubting or criticising an earlier

That being said, it's a help string for an undocumented option that only
makes sense as --no-guess (i.e. it's on by default).  You may as well
just leave it untranslated.

Not your fault or area of expertise, but most of the git-config options
seem to suffer the problem that there cannot be two (or more)
argument descriptors in the help.

I.e., right now it looks like

    --get                 get value: name [value-regex]                                                
    --get-all             get all values: key [value-regex]
    --get-regexp          get values for regexp: name-regex [value-regex]

So far it's understandable, if a bit hard to read.  But this is very
confusing:

An alternate object [store] is essentially a pointer to the object store
of another repository.  It may best be left untranslated, as it's a
pretty advanced feature.

So it's not an upstream repo, and in fact doesn't even have to be a
branch.  I don't really have a good suggestion though.  Perhaps you can

Smaller is not really the point: they are packs that do not have the
delta bases.  It can only be used in the context of a repository that
has them.  A thin pack is used only(?) in network transfer, and then

Furthermore I've unified the translation of "email" to "Email",

How about "umschreiben"? "neu schreiben" is more like "write from
scratch", whereas "rewrite" is more often about taking a given base and
modifying it.

The manpage says

I'm not really sure what to do with it. In this version (see below) I kept
it. Did you mean we should add "(siehe Hilfeseite)" or something in the
translation, or does it belong to the original message and the translation
would just follow?

I'd say the translation above is fine, and no matter what language the
user messages are in, the user would have to consult the man page for
this very special feature, but I don't think we have to say so explicitly.

I can't seem to find the other occurence in de.po, but state should be
the same as in

"copy out the files from named stage" (checkout-index).

"Zustand" seems to be appropriate.
