Well, I know what the commit is /that/ was all that was stored. So I (actually supermodule-git does): cd $DIRECTORY_ASSOCIATED_WITH_SUBMODULE git checkout -f $COMMIT_FROM_SUPERMODULE Obviously, this is grossly simplified.
