I noticed a few months ago that work was being done on providing capability for sparse/narrow checkout. I was looking forward to using this feature, but I haven't seen any mention of it for a while. Is it still in the works? If so, is there an estimate of when it will be released?

Yes, I gathered from those posts that work was being done. But I don't see this
feature in the latest stable release (1.6.1.3), so I was wondering whether it
has been abandoned or whether I should be more patient. This feature would be
useful to us, so I just wanted to make sure it hasn't fallen through the
cracks...

I'm afraid the previous.
Quoting http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/104639:
