[RFC/PATCH 0/8] user-manual: style improvements

This patch series tries to improve the style of the user-manual.

For a quick preview check:

Some changes are non-controversial, like s/git-foo/git foo/ while the font
style changes might be.

There's one huge patch for quoting improvements, which requires the css style
patch in order to look good. It probably needs to be split, but for now this is RFC.

Except that in the previous patch[1] (#7) I'm adding a new global
section that explains how to configure git in different ways:

I don't think it makes sense to explain "either ... or ..." each time
we deal with 'git config' in the manual if it's explained in the very
beginning.

at first because the patch really looked like it was written by  
someone who hadn't ever seen the thread, as it doesn't address the  
points raised in the thread at all.

If you expect him to apply your patch, you'll probably want to address  
those concerns (and possibly others raised in referenced thread) in  
the commit message.

manual we are only going to deal with 'global' and 'repository', where
'repository' variables take precedence over 'global' ones.

Sounds OK, but "on this" should be "in this", or even simpler just:
"this manual will only deal with...".  And then 'global' and
'repository' aren't really nouns on their own (what are they
modifying?).  So maybe: "deal with 'global' and 'repository' variables"?

Well, Google, Gmail and even Wikipedia have a 'small' font-size. I'm
sure people don't find Wikipedia hard to read :)

The only difference with the user manual is that it actually takes the
whole screen, so it might be difficult to follow such big lines with a
small font. I haven't made up my mind yet... I think a 'normal'
font-size also looks good.

That's correct.

The problem is that when the user has a different size for the
sans-serif and monospace fonts it looks horrible when they are on the
same paragraph. I thought 1em did the trick, but you are right, it
doesn't.

It looks like the only way to fix this is to set absolute sizes.

Also, it seems that everything which is not black is blue, except for
terms, which are green and slanted. I don't think that looks nice
together. How about slanted blue?

do so.  And remember that some people are colour-challenged.

By the way, are you using a font that is a bit smaller than the body text
to render the examples?  I find it harder to read.

I thought that browsers typically have user control to let you set the
standard font size and choice independently for proportional, serif, sans
and mono, and people who want to see typewriter face in smaller font would
already have set their browser to do so (I don't do so myself because I'd
rather want to see them in uniform size).  I haven't checked your CSS, but
if you are doing "monospace smaller than usual", aren't you effectively
(1) doing disservice to people like me, and (2) doing disservice to people
who do want smaller monospace and configured their browser already (the
outcome would be doubly smaller, which may become too small)?

1 more color makes a page 'too colorful'? Keep in mind that we already
are using 2 colors of blue, links by default have yet another color of
blue and visited links have a magenta color.

The color-challenged people would already see that text as italic,
there's no reason for the non-color-challenged people to _not_ take
advantage of being able to distinguish a different color. If you don't
like green, then fine, the other options are a) pick a different color
b) make the text bold.

I think bold is too distracting and a color that is a) hue-similar to
blue and b) closely dark to black, is the best choice: green.

Why do people have problems reading small fonts? That's exactly the
same font-size you'll see on Wikipedia, Google, and many other sites:
'small'. Do you have problems reading Wikipedia?

By that logic no web site should ever choose a different font-size
than 'normal', and of course they do.

FreeSans, 14pt (and I default to sans-serif for proportional text).

You're right, for some reason in that font it's the difference is much
more noticeable. Both Google and Wikipedia seem to be doing some
tricks scaling up and down the font-size. Still, in the end the
font-size looks very small on Gmail... strange.

So in the end Wikipedia: 91%, Gmail: 80%, Google: 86%... small is 79%.

I've updated it again, changing the 'green' color to something more
subtle and reverted all the font-size changes.

I don't mind having 2, they just don't look good together over here, on
my screen and to my eyes...

Right now we have "plain old asciidoc look" which doesn't look that old
after all. You pointed out a deficiency, and I'm all for fixing it. I
just think that introducing new colors is something that may require a
ground up rethinking of the theme being used: make it informative but
unobtrusive. Also, I'm against over-emphasizing: use slanted or a
specific color, but not both. Unless one color means emphasizing and
slanted means file, for example.

I think it looks better with color to emphasize that it is different,
just as the <code> blocks get monospaced _and_ colored.

However, I think this is a matter of poor semantic markup in the first
place. Italics on a word for emphasis in text is very different from
what is happening here, which is essentially typesetting math variables.
I would say that `Z` is probably a better match, though I prefer the
LaTeX-style "math mode" italics for this sort of thing. I think asciidoc
supports some math markup, but I haven't lookd at it.

So basically, I think these variables look fine slanted and green. But I
think an emphasized word in the text should not be green.

In that case I actually don't know why to emphasize the commit names at
all. (And not all are emphasized.) If it's about distinguishing upper
case letters from commit names, i.e. denoting the latter as variables,
then slanting them suffices.

I don't wnat to complicate thos or blow this up or anything, but (as I
pointed out in another thread) we need a style guide first, something like:

- Write commands in backticks.
- Write arguments (appearing apart from the command) in backticks.
- Write paths as 'path'.
- Write quotation in ``quotation''.
- Write commit names as ?

Then, after having the semantic markup distinction (which we don't have
right now), we can talk meaningfully about the visual distinction for
the various backends we have.

That's exactly what my patches are trying to do. Since asciidoc
doesn't have that many distinctions I followed a slightly more general
guideline; if 'foo' is not distinct enough, then do '"foo"'. In some
places I was lazy, so I did 'Z' instead of '"Z"', but again, this is
only RFC.

After a bit more thinking I think some long texts like
remote.<name>.url should also be '"remote.<name>.url"'.

Also, you cannot apply a general rule, like 'all commands should have
backticks'. Some command are meant to be emphasized while others have
been repeated so often that it doesn't make sense. The same applies
with links.

I've updated the CSS. Can you take a look again?

I changed the font-size to normal, except for the code chunks. Also, I
changed the font of the in-paragrah code tags to sans-serif, that's
the most sane way I can think to fix the problem with different
font-size configured for monospace font.

I also reverted the line-height change.

Well, it looks better to me, in that the body text isn't small and
scrunched. The code chunks are, of course, noticeably smaller. I really
don't see what you're trying to accomplish with that. Are you trying to
make it fit into browsers where we are somehow wrapping in the code
chunks?

Hrm. I'm not sure that is particularly sane. You have the style for a
<tt> tag rendering as a sans-serif font. But the _definition_ of tt is
to render as a monospace font.

As it happens, there are no <tt> tags at all in the document, so that
change is irrelevant (and I wonder if we should ditch the tt.literal
specifier entirely). But I tend to think that <code> tags generally
follow the same principle. Looking over the document, I didn't find
anything that looked broken by it (at least in Firefox using my set of
fonts). But it just seems counterintuitive.

If you are unsatisfied with the size of the text in <code> blocks,
can't you set some variant of an em (e.g., 1.1em)?


Looking at all of these <code> examples did make me notice one thing:
there are some special characters used that are probably
counterintuitive. For instance, "--not" is rendered with a single long
dash instead of two short dashes. A code snippet has a right-arrow
character instead of "->". I assume this is asciidoc trying to be
clever, but I haven't looked into it.

I think some of these were intentionally left in the original mass
dashes to spaces conversion. The intent was that one could use the
git-show form in talking about the command in text.

However, I think I actually prefer the version given by your patch. I
just wanted to point out that this is a decision to change how we
mention these in the documentation and not simply a fix for things that
got missed in the conversion. Others may disagree on how it looks.

It seems like you added monospace backticks in most locations. Is there
a reason not to standardize on that and use `git show` here?

A subsequent patch is adding the monospace backticks and a lot more
quotation stuff.

In this patch I tried to focus on git-foo, and add the backticks only
when there are no delimiters, so I replaced "git-foo" with "git foo"
and git-foo with `git foo`. I also didn't add backticks on the titles
because I thought it was a bit controversial and was probably better
in a separate patch.
