Note that you don't have to convince me of anything --- I was just trying to help by providing my reactions and some background. If the Right Thing to Do as revealed by list consensus or Junio's decree ;-) involves keeping CHERRY_PICK_HELP difficult to use and fragile, I won't mind much as long as rebase -i works, since I don't have any private scripts that use CHERRY_PICK_HELP personally.
