FWIW, this doesn't work on OS X / Darwin.  'as' doesn't take a --32
flag, it takes an -arch i386 flag.  After changing that, I get:

as -arch i386  -o sha1-586.o sha1-586.s

- at which point I have no idea how to fix it.
