I use a simple Perl script called create-topic-branches.
It can be found here:

When it is run, it will print the "git branch" commands needed
to create the topic branches. Either copy and paste the
commands for the branches you are interested in,
or do something like this:

create-topic-branches next..pu | grep bg/ | sh

which will create local branches for any of my own
branches that are currently included in 'pu'.
