Last I heard that was a feature mutt people regret. Go back to the mail archive for details -- you robbed me 30 seconds so I won't do a research for you this time as I usually do ;-). The "feature" is to allow you be lazy and not filter on your own end and force everybody who wants to respond to you to fix up the addressee header. In other words, it is not a "feature" for people who receives your mail at all.
