Ok, so this is a cleaned-up series of three commits that I think are
worthy of being considered for inclusion. They're against current
master, maybe I should have done it against pu or next, but I doubt it
really clashes with anything, since the code hasn't changed recently
afaik.

Thanks; they all look very sane.  There indeed is a small conflict with a
topic in 'pu', but the resolution is straightforward.

I would suggest s/propler/properly/, though...
