This is Perl 5.6 or later. Breaks on Perl 5.5, which is still in use
in some places.
To be compatible with 5.5, you have to create a handle explicitly:
require IO::Handle;
my $oh = IO::Handle->new;
open $oh, qw(...) ...;
That works all the way back to 5.4, which is the earliest Perl
supported by the core team.
