The concept of what the patch is doing is good, but I'd recommend
@cvspasslocations = ($ENV{'HOME'}."/cvspass", $ENV{'HOME'}."/.cvs/cvspass")
foreach $cvspass (@cvspasslocations) {
open(...
and forgo the "matching" test.
