Thank you very much! I took the liberty of squashing your 3 commits into
one ;-)
I see that 5 translations are missing:
Commit, Checkout..., Unstage From Commit, Sign Off, Apple
I guess that "Unstage From Commit" needs to be translated, but that you
wanted to keep the others as-English, right?

Yeah, I was writing you an email suggesting to at least merge my
latest patch into the previous one.
Out of curiosity, how did you merge my 3 commits into one? (I'm really
a newbie).

Yes, I even translated a few words that I think should remain in English.
I FWed my patch to my local LUG, I'll collect some feedback and post a
followup patch.

There are two nice way to do it: Either make a new branch and squash
merge the commits:
$ git reset --hard HEAD~3
$ git merge --squash HEAD@{1}
(Explanation: This does not really make a new branch, but resets the
current HEAD 3 commits back. Then it uses the _reflog_ to get at the old
HEAD, and merges it with the "--squash" option.)
The second is what I actually did: I used the interactive mode of rebase:
$ git rebase -i HEAD~3
[edit the 2nd and 3rd "pick" to become "squash"]

io userei queste parole:
merge unione, fusione/unire, fondere
commit salvataggio/salvare (forse troppo inflazionato)
amend correzione/correggere
hunk parte
fetch prendi da
Per il resto, avrei tradotto più o meno come segue. Che ne dici?

I was wondering what was going on with this thread :-)
I'll move the discussion off list with Michael.
Just for your information, it's "Mi dispiace" not "Mi piace" (that
means "I like it" :-)

Yes, I wanted to say that I like "it" ("it" not being non-Italian, but
the work Michael has done). ;-)
Forse "parte" e troppo generale per dire "hunk"?

Wow, I just thought you didn't understand Italian :-)

Yes I think so.
In my latest patch I used the word "Sezione" which sounds a bit more
appropriated.

There are some words that in my opinion it would be better do not
translate but to leave in english, expecially on computer stuff
italian people it's already used to the original english word.
In our example "resettare" it's not italian, it's a italianized (very
ugly) form of "to reset" and it would be really better to use "reset".

Agree. We just have to agree on which words keep in English.

I agree, again.
"Resettare" was really too ugly, in my last patch I posted to the list
I changed it to "Reimposta".

Ah, I completely forgot to say that I applied and pushed it...

I'm not in love with translation of 'programming tools', but is better
to keep in English
at least words like: 'Commit', 'Reset', 'Merge', 'Commit Message' and 'Hunk'
Also is better to avoid adding context or extra words during translation .
For example in translation like "Rescan" to "Riesamina il database" the word
"database" is superfluous.
"Rescan"-> "Riesamina".. is ok
Is like the typical menu item File -> Save.. The word 'Save' has a
precise context and is
superfluous to traslate it as "Salva File" (that sound like "File ->
Save File").

Those who want to use the English version can always do
LANG=en_US git gui
...but since there are going to be very few non-IT people that use
git, I guess most SCM's vocabulary can be left untranslated. The
most difficult words to translate (and so probably they should be
left unchanged) in this context are "merge" and "commit".
Thinking about it, shouldn't we add an help page in git gui with
a "mini glossary" (a short version of the git glossary) in it?
Maybe something like this:
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controllo_versione#Glossario
(but more centered on git, of course).
I wonder what other SCM (or SCM gui) projects do (if they are into
i18n at all).

Yes. I even think that "reset" is kind of common in Italy (at
least for most people that use some electronic device). But maybe
I'm wrong.

commit it's more "create a revision" than "save", also "push" its more
save/update upstream that "propagate".
I'm writing in english so that someone else could help to find a
proper english synonim, then translate it's not a problem.

Mmh... IMO that could sounds a bit confusing for a newbie.
It's easier, for me, to visualize a commit like the way to "save" in
the history a change.

I can't disagree. But it would be nice to use a single word.

Yes, thank you Marco.
I'll be away from my linux box at least until Tuesday evening so don't
