Ah, now I get it.  You are looking for the _key_ whose value is "$1".  But 
then you really should use "^$1$", and not just "$1", otherwise you will 
get unintended behaviour when one submodule's name is a substring of 
another submodule's name.

And you do not need the eol hack.
