Hi everybody,
As I mentioned a ~month ago[1], GitHub is not hosting an in-person Git
Merge this year. Instead, we're focusing our efforts on hosting a
Virtual Contributor's Summit, the details of which are below.
- We'll host the Contributor's Summit on either Zoom or Microsoft
Teams (since GitHub is in the process of transitioning from the
former to the latter).
- The schedule/duration is not fixed, there are options to vote on
preferred days, length, and timezones in the form(s) below.
- To participate, you must be either (a) an active Git contributor,
(b) planning on contributing soon, or (c) working on a Git-related
project that has interest in Git's internals. If you aren't sure
whether or not you are welcome, please ask!
Participants should fill out the following forms:
- https://forms.gle/xiRcJWBAWJjWR7Zh6 (participants)
- https://forms.gle/rQ5oWVSVBwyPZ1K29 (topics)
The participants and topics lists are being recorded in the
spreadsheet below, and this is also the place to record your vote(s)
on topic selection.

Please send any feedback or suggestions you have for this year's
Contributor's Summit to me on- or off-list. My hope for this year is
to have a smaller, remote-friendly, diverse, and efficient discussion.
As we get closer to the date, we'll finalize the schedule, make sure
we have volunteers to take notes, etc.
I'm looking forward to seeing everybody (virtually) soon :-).
Thanks,
Taylor

FYI, I added the first week of October as a potential set of dates as
well.
I configured the participants form to accept at most one response per
person, but with the ability to edit any existing response.
This configuration seems to require a Google account, please let me know
if that's an issue for anyone.
Thanks,
Taylor

Since it's virtual this year, my team is considering hosting a "watch
party" in Silicon Valley, to get at least a few folks to be able to
meet face to face, even though we can't travel. Basically, we'd book a
conference room at some Google office, invite local contributors to
come along, and dial into the summit from that room - nothing fancy,
no extra programming, maybe catering. Before we make any solid plans
it would help to know how many people would be interested in such a
thing. If you're already planning to attend the summit and would be
interested in attending such a thing, could you direct-reply and let
me know?
Thanks,
- Emily

Sounds fun, thanks for organizing. I think my only request would be that
attendees sign up through the forms linked above, and that we limit
attendees to folks who meet the criteria (active Git contributor, or
planning on becoming one).

I wouldn't be able to make it, but I hope that others do.
Thanks,
Taylor

Now that we have dates (thanks Taylor!) I'm happy to confirm that
Google is indeed able to host a "watch party" at one of our offices in
Sunnyvale (specifics TBD). As Taylor emphasized, we're only able to
invite people who already meet the criteria he named and have signed
up on the main sheet. If you are one of those people and haven't
already gotten in touch with me, please do so, it would be fun to
spend some in person time :)
For those who did already get in touch with me, I'll send details
without the rest of the list shortly.
Thanks!
- Emily

Now that most folks have filled out the forms, it looks like the winning
dates are 2029-09-26 and 2023-09-27. Among those dates, there was a
pretty even split between preferring a single day (with 9 votes), and
preferring two days (with 8 votes).
Let's plan on meeting on both:
- 2023-09-26: from 10am to 2pm CDT (UTC-5)
- 2023-09-27: from 10am to 2pm CDT (UTC-5)
The meeting will be hosted on Zoom, and I'll email folks separately
off-list with the meeting URL and passcode to join.
If you have any topics you'd like to discuss or lead, make sure to add
them to the "Topics" sheet at:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EnhmTeEqRBlEI2pMAO3oZ4rO1xEwBzYp2vS4CMtvge8
Between now and then, please also feel free to share any thoughts on how
we should schedule topics, organize note-takers, make sure the discussion
keeps flowing and includes everybody, etc.
See you then!
Thanks,
Taylor
