The cache file for all of the linux repository (as of a few weeks ago) is around 42MB, without names. The names would probably add 2 or 3 MB on top of that. That's probably about as big as I'd want to get, as the whole slice (minus the name list) is mapped to memory (then again bigger might be ok; I'm not an expert on mem mapping). The rev-cache command fuse provides functionality to ignore certain cache sizes, which was geared towards preventing overly large slices.
