[PATCH v4 00/27] Compile with `-Wwrite-strings`

Hi,

this is another minor reroll of my patch series that prepares the code
base to compile with `-Wwrite-strings`.

There are only some small changes compared to v3:

  - Fix typos in some commit messages.

  - Fix accidental conversion of "." to "" in basename/dirname
    compatibility code. Also, remove the unused variable.
