Take a look at complexity of that explanation. And the need for additional
commit. That balanced against all the headaches of having connectivity
header other than "parent".

Perhaps it would be better (and easier) just to say

   note prior parent^1

or

   note prior <sha1>

repeating <sha1> found in parent.


Just a thought.
