Much thanks for your extensive writeup, Junio! I will try to follow your
advice on a brand new git clone'ed repository and just reapply my
changes there into the topic branch (makes sense for these small sets
of changes; but not for larger sets ... read my comments below).
But for my education, I've interspersed below some questions where I
am still misunderstanding the situation or intent behind your
recommendation:

Refering to that git merge bg/no-progress command above. You said not
to merge from master to bg/no-progress at this early stage, which
makes sense, but now you are going in the reverse via master <--
bg/no-progress. And here I do not see a commit, but that command is
followed straight way with a "git checkout bg/no-progress" below. Is
that just for testing the merge with the intent of just throwing the
changes away? In other words, is this next "git checkout
bg/no-progress" command going to silently throw away the "git merge
bg/progress" step at this point?

Similar question: Is this next "git checkout bg/no-progress" below
going to loose the conflicts I would have just resolved above

What do you mean by "reorder, squash" mean here? Is that something
that is done as a part of the -i option to git rebase?

What is the significance of the ^0 construct tacked onto the end of
"bg/no-progress" at this point, versus just "git checkout
bg/no-progress" without the "^0"?
I made the mistake of reading the "SPECIFYING REVISIONS" section in
git-rev-parse(1) manual, which states:
A suffix ^ to a revision parameter means the first parent of that
commit object. ^<n> means the <n>th parent (i.e. rev^ is
equivalent to rev^1). As a special rule, rev^0 means the commit
itself and is used when rev is the object name of a tag object
that refers to a commit object.
I'm having a hard time translating "tag object" and "commit object"
into things I understand w.r.t. the repo I see from my end.

The --ours option to git-merge does not seem to be documented (at
least it is not in the user manual). There is a --ours option
indicated in the git-checkout man page.

The rebase flow would work better for this given that I do eventually
want to send my changes upstream. So, for my/our future Googling
reference: I quote the section out of
