Try changing

my $project = ($cgi->param('p') || $ENV{'PATH_INFO'});
if (defined $project) {
        $project =~ s|^/||; $project =~ s|/$||;

to

my $project = ($cgi->param('p') || $ENV{'PATH_INFO'});
$project =~ s|^/||; $project =~ s|/$||;
if (defined $project && $project) {     

(and send patch if it works, please).
