Ah, Ok, then insertion of cdup output does make sense (after all cdup was
designed to be used that way).

Why is the topic a non-ff merge? Here's a normal non-email workflow:
$ git clone git://central/repo.git
$ cd repo
$ edit, commit, edit, commit, looks good
$ git fetch origin
$ git log -p master..origin/master # (1)
$ git merge origin/master
$ compile, test, etc
$ git push origin master # (2)
(1) inspect changes in origin/master, make sure you want to merge
(2) this fast-forwards git://central/repo.git/refs/heads/master from
local master
Or, if you prefer topic branches:
$ git clone git://central/repo.git
$ cd repo
$ git checkout -b topic origin/master
$ edit, commit, edit, commit, looks good
$ git checkout master
$ git pull # (1)
$ git merge topic
$ compile, test, etc
$ git push origin master (2)
$ git branch -d topic
(1) this fast-forwards local master since local development is
on topic.
(2) as above, this fast-forwards
git://central/repo.git/refs/heads/master from local master
So this way git://central/repo.git/refs/heads/master is never reset.
But, if you do have a valid reason for resetting, then what I said in
my previous message still applies.

* [JGIT PATCH v3] Create a debugging tool "jgit debug-rebuild-commitgraph"

To: Robin Rosenberg; +Cc: git
In-Reply-To: <20090316201333.GR22920@spearce.org>
This is a command line tool which can be used to import only
the commit graph of another Git repository, to help debug a
topology related bug, without actually needing a clone of the
problematic repository.

No, unfortunately. In my bug case the changed file was in another

This was generated from git format-patch -M. After applying the patch,

I recently figured out a way to alter the transport API slightly to make
it possible to attach foreign VCSes there. This amounts to allowing
get_refs_list() to leave the sha1s null, and allowing fetch() to set them.
This just requires a copy of a ref list in the clone path, and a check to
make null (for not having a ref) not match null (for not knowing the hash
of the ref) in the fetch logic.
I think I will end up changing the spec, mostly to allow a single
non-trivial call to the helper to provide both the list of refs and the
fast-import stream; this matches how the pack protocol works (except, of
course, that the initial list doesn't have hashes, and the output goes to
fast-import instead of unpack-objects). I'm going to rebase the series at
some point, but I've been focused more on the more core transport and
remote stuff now that I think I can go through that.

It's true that you could get false positives, as you say. What's less
obvious to me is whether it would be a good idea for the algorithm to try
to deal with them, or just report the earliest revision that failed
and leave it
up to the intelligence of the user to decide whether it is a false positive,
and what to do about it.
In the absence of some user-provided way of discriminating, the only way
I can see for the algorithm can distinguish between revisions affected by
the real bug as opposed to ones affected by false positives is to
assume that
the false positives occur at some lower rate. There are two
difficulties with this:
first, presumably it would have to start sampling more times at some locations
in order to figure out what the rate is at them. This sounds like it
would be expensive -
currently the algorithm can usually get away with looking at most locations no
more than once. Secondly, I'm not sure how to justify this
assumption, or model it.
In short, false positives look like a can of worms to me; I'm hoping
the algorithm is
useful without considering them.
The algorithm actually has one potentially problematic assumptions
already - or rather,
it has two alternative assumptions, neither of which is completely believable.
It can either assume that the bug causes faults at the same rate in
all affected revisions,
or that the affected revisions each have their own completely
independent rate. Originally
I thought that the latter would be the more conservative assumption -
it certainly assumes less.
However, the following argument convinces me that the other one is
actually more conservative:
Suppose that in the latest revision, we observe a fault in one run out
of ten. Under the second
assumption, this observed rate has no effect on our belief about the
fault rate in other affected
revisions, if any. This means that with a uniform prior on the fault
rate, we more or less start out
assuming a fault rate of 50% on any other affected revisions - much
higher, implausably so.
If any of them are only affected at a rate of one in ten, the
algorithm is quite likely to terminate without
seeing a fault there, concluding that the bug was introduced later
than it really was.
On the other hand, we know quite well that the fault rate isn't
necessarily going to be
identical either. Of the two, I think the assumption of identical
rates is the more practical one, more
likely to actually identify the correct location. It does leave me
wondering whether some intermediate
assumption would more accurately represent our experience of fault
rates, but I haven't thought of a
really convincing one.

rebase doesn't actually switch to another branch here, but it does
detach HEAD. To get back to a state you can work from, it's a simple
case of following the instructions rebase outputs:
1) edit conflicted files to fix the conflicts.
2) stage new versions of files (e.g. git add file.txt)
3) git rebase --continue
Here's what happens:
jast@perceptron 1% cat test.txt

No NNTP access, and webmail is expressly forbidden. Actually, any URL that looks like it might be a web mail account is blocked.
I'm using NNTP when at home, on the weekend or whatever. It makes it easier to reply in-thread. And I'm using Thunderbird.

I think the difference is because you mail in your changes to master, and I'm having developers cooperate in advancing that branch. The only thing I need a local copy of dev for is to checkout during the "work completed" phase, in which case the topic's result is added to the top of dev for all to see, either as a single amalgamated checkin or a non-ff merge.
Can you suggest a better way of doing that, where "better" means minimizing the number of cookbook incantations to learn?
If, during that procedure, the instruction to
git checkout dev
were replaced by one that checks out the remote and creates the local at that time (what is the argument?), then after pushing the result, delete the local dev.
Keeping the local dev around has the advantage of being able to see what changes have taken place without having to be implicit by eyeballing where your topics branch off from, and makes it clear what you've read/understood already even if you are not going to rebase your topic.

In addition to these three possibilities we could also use config.h only
in the event that the user decides to run configure. When using a
config header autoconf appends -DHAVE_CONFIG_H to the CPPFLAGS. So
the code could conditionally include it.
Although I'm not really sure if this still maintains the degree of user
control you're looking for.

Let me illustrate why this is still probably wrong. I have a clone of
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git. It has the following remote
tracking branches:
$ git branch -r
origin/html
origin/maint
origin/man
origin/master
origin/next
origin/pu
origin/todo
origin/master is never reset. origin/pu resets often. When I want to
work on git, I typically create a branch from origin/master. In this
case, I would almost never want to reset that branch. So I'd typically
do:
$ git checkout -b topic origin/master
$ edit, commit, edit, commit...
$ git fetch
$ git log origin/master..topic
$ git rebase origin/master
Rarely, I'll base a topic on origin/pu. And origin/pu might get reset.
But even if it were, I wouldn't want to blindly reset my local branch
to match, thus losing my local changes. Instead I'd do this:
$ git checkout -b pu-topic origin/pu
$ git tag pu-topic-base # handy when origin/pu is reset
$ edit, commit, edit, commit
$ git fetch
drat, origin/pu was reset
$ git rebase --onto origin/pu pu-topic-base
And in the rare circumstance that I really do want to reset a local
branch, I'd do this:
$ git checkout dev
examine, make sure I really want to reset
$ git reset --hard origin/dev
I can't really think of a good reason I'd want to reset a local branch
which I haven't checked out.

* [TopGit PATCH] tg-patch: fix invocation in sub working tree directory
From: Bert Wesarg @ 2009-03-16 22:08 UTC (permalink / raw)

tg patch won't work in a sub directory of the working tree, because 'git diff
--name-only' prints the names relative to the top working tree.
This is only a quick fix which prefixes all file names with 'git rev-parse
--show-cdup'. The right solution would be to cd into the top working tree
somewhere in tg.sh.

I must have been unclear somewhere, because I do indeed assume that
a single observation of the symptom rules out the origin of the bug being
later than that observation.
If you have a play with the software in manual mode, you can see that its
behaviour reflects this - it starts out doing something like an
ordinary binary search, albeit skewed towards older revisions (it
seems to go for
a roughly 1:2 division, rather than the usual 1:1). Then once it has got to the
point where a deterministic search would end, it hammers away at the parent(s)
of the newest revision where the fault was observed, until it is satisfied that
it cannot be found there. All this just emerges from the generic least-entropy
algorithm; I didn't know what it would do until I got it running.

That worked. Thanks.
> No idea. But why not use a real mail user agent?
Because I'm using git for work, on work time, so I'm using the work computer. It uses "exchange" instead of a real mail server. Perhaps there are better mailers that work with Exchange, but it might not do everything the "groupware" stuff does, and that would affect the team interaction. Also, there is a matter of "group policy" which means I'm not in full control of my own machine.
The web is barely usable from here, too. The censor is set up, I guess, to stop ordinary desktop users like secretaries and accountants from doing anything to their machine, so the very things I'm interested in -- Windows tools, development topics, anything under ftp: -- is blocked !

Tools -> Options -> Preferences -> E-mail Options, set "When replying to
a message" to "Prefix each line of the original message".

Tools -> Options -> Mail Format, set "Compose in this message format" to
"Plain Text".

No idea. But why not use a real mail user agent?

Avoiding garbage is better than converting it to something useful. If
someone wrote an Outlook mail sanitizer, I'd probably use it at work,
too, though.

Yes, long ago, and thankfully I don't remember much about it. There's
always a way to do worse -- that's small comfort.

OK.
I still disagree with the name change. Can we hide the outer name by
making it private? Or come up with a better name for the inner one?

Ok, I missed the real reason in the comment. It is name hiding. objectsUrl
is the name of another variable in the outer scope.

I think traditionalists who do not like changing the default already know
these, though. I would not object to the push.default as a _choice_.
In fact, sourceforge.jp (they added git support late last year, and I keep
a secondary public repository just like my alt-git.git at repo.or.cz) is
one of such places. It seems to forbid non fast-forward pushes, and that
is why I have been pushing only maint and master there. It does allow
deletion, and I could push deletion followed by creation in two stages,
i.e. "git push sfjp :pu && git push sfjp pu", but I did not bother.
In a later part of the message you are responding to (but did not quote),
I was agreeing with all of what you wrote here, and even more ;-) Notice
the "tradeoff does not look too bad to me" part.
Your new [1/2] gives the choice without advertisement, and _if_ you remove
or tone down "The default may change in the future" from [2/2], it becomes
purely an advertisement of the feature to help people from burning
themselves. I do not see anything a sane traditionist would object to at
that point, and I thought we could even squash the two into one commit
(which was what I meant by "I am inclined to change my mind" in the
message you are responding to).
