* [PATCH v2 05/12] refs DWIMmery: use the same rule for both "git fetch" and others
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
"git log frotz" can DWIM to "refs/remotes/frotz/HEAD", but in the remote
access context, "git fetch frotz" to fetch what the other side happened to
have fetched from what it calls 'frotz' (which may not have any relation
to what we consider is 'frotz') the last time would not make much sense,
so the fetch rules table did not include "refs/remotes/%.*s/HEAD".
When the user really wants to, "git fetch $there remotes/frotz/HEAD" would
let her do so anyway, so this is not about safety or security; it merely
is about confusion avoidance and discouraging meaningless usage.
Specifically, it is _not_ about ambiguity avoidance. A name that would
become ambiguous if we use the same rules table for both fetch and local
rev-parse would be ambiguous locally at the remote side.
So for the same reason as we added rule to allow "git fetch $there v1.0"
instead of "git fetch $there tags/v1.0" in the previous commit, here is a
bit longer rope for the users, which incidentally simplifies our code.

* [PATCH v2 09/12] merge: make usage of commit->util more extensible
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
The merge-recursive code uses the commit->util field directly to annotate
the commit objects given from the command line, i.e. the remote heads to
be merged, with a single string to be used to describe it in its trace
messages and conflict markers.
Correct this short-signtedness by redefining the field to be a pointer to
a structure "struct merge_remote_desc" that later enhancements can add
more information. Store the original objects we were told to merge in a
field "obj" in this struct, so that we can recover the tag we were told to
merge.

Now that we allow pulling a tag from the remote site to validate the
authenticity, we should give the user the final chance to verify and
edit the merge message.

* [PATCH v2 11/12] commit: copy merged signed tags to headers of merge commit
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
Now MERGE_HEAD records the tag objects without peeling, we could record
the result of manual conflict resolution via "git commit" without losing
the tag information.
In hindsight, it would have been better to make "merge --continue" as the
way to continue from such an interrupted merge, not "commit", but this is
a backward compatibility baggage we would need to carry around for now.

* [PATCH v2 08/12] fmt-merge-msg: Add contents of merged tag in the merge message
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
When a contributor asks the integrator to merge her history, a signed tag
can be a good vehicle to communicate the authenticity of the request while
conveying other information such as the purpose of the topic.
E.g. a signed tag "for-linus" can be created, and the integrator can run:
$ git pull git://example.com/work.git/ for-linus
This would allow the integrator to run "git verify-tag FETCH_HEAD" to
validate the signed tag.
Update fmt-merge-msg so that it pre-fills the merge message template with
the body (but not signature) of the tag object to help the integrator write
a better merge message, in the same spirit as the existing merge.log summary
lines.
The message that comes from GPG signature validation is also included in
the merge message template to help the integrator verify it, but they are
prefixed with "#" to make them comments.

* [PATCH v2 06/12] fmt-merge-msg: avoid early returns
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
In various places in the codepath, the program tries to return early
assuming there is no more work needed. That is generally untrue when
over time new features are added.

* [PATCH v2 04/12] fetch: allow "git fetch $there v1.0" to fetch a tag
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
You can already do so with "git fetch $there tags/v1.0" but if it is not
ambiguous there is no reason to force users to type more.

* [PATCH v2 02/12] fetch: do not store peeled tag object names in FETCH_HEAD
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
From: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
We do not want to record tags as parents of a merge when the user does
"git pull $there tag v1.0" to merge tagged commit, but that is not a good
enough excuse to peel the tag down to commit when storing in FETCH_HEAD.
The caller of underlying "git fetch $there tag v1.0" may have other uses
of information contained in v1.0 tag in mind.
[jc: the test adjustment is to update for the new expectation]

* [PATCH v2 03/12] merge: notice local merging of tags and keep it unwrapped
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
This also updates the autogenerated merge title message from "merge commit X"
to "merge tag X", and its effect can be seen in the changes to the test suite.

* [PATCH v2 01/12] Split GPG interface into its own helper library
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320721245-13223-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
This mostly moves existing code from builtin/tag.c (for signing)
and builtin/verify-tag.c (for verifying) to a new gpg-interface.c
file to provide a more generic library interface.
- sign_buffer() takes a payload strbuf, a signature strbuf, and a signing
key, runs "gpg" to produce a detached signature for the payload, and
appends it to the signature strbuf. The contents of a signed tag that
concatenates the payload and the detached signature can be produced by
giving the same strbuf as payload and signature strbuf.
- verify_signed_buffer() takes a payload and a detached signature as
<ptr, len> pairs, and runs "gpg --verify" to see if the payload matches
the signature. It can optionally capture the output from GPG to allow
the callers to pretty-print it in a way more suitable for their
contexts.
"verify-tag" (aka "tag -v") used to save the whole tag contents as if it
is a detached signature, and fed gpg the payload part of the tag. It
relied on gpg to fail when the given tag is not signed but just is
annotated. The updated run_gpg_verify() function detects the lack of
detached signature in the input, and errors out without bothering "gpg".

* [PATCH v2 00/12] Pulling signed/annotated tags
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 3:00 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Linus Torvalds
In-Reply-To: <1320472900-6601-1-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com>
This is a re-roll of the fourth iteration.
Split GPG interface into its own helper library
fetch: do not store peeled tag object names in FETCH_HEAD
merge: notice local merging of tags and keep it unwrapped
fetch: allow "git fetch $there v1.0" to fetch a tag
refs DWIMmery: use the same rule for both "git fetch" and others
fmt-merge-msg: avoid early returns
fmt-merge-msg: package options into a structure
The above are unchanged from v1, except for the test patch that is
gone. It has been merged into the patch that changes the behaviour to
require the adjustment to the test.
fmt-merge-msg: Add contents of merged tag in the merge message
This is updated to not show the ugly tag contents with "tag:" prefix in
the merge log editor. Instead, the body of the tag (excluding the
signature if it is a signed tag) is given without any prefix to help the
integrator write a better log message. This happens even when merging an
annotated (not signed) tag.
merge: make usage of commit->util more extensible
merge: record tag objects without peeling in MERGE_HEAD
commit: copy merged signed tags to headers of merge commit
These three are new and are necessary to copy "cat-file tag" of a signed
tag to the header of resulting merge commit.
merge: force edit mode when merging a tag object
The implementation of this one has changed, but the spirit hasn't.

* [ANNOUNCE] Git 1.7.8.rc1
From: Junio C Hamano @ 2011-11-08 2:56 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git
A release candidate Git 1.7.8.rc1 is available for testing. Since rc0, we
killed all known regressions. Because there won't be any more new feature
merged until the 1.7.8 final, it is a good time for the coolest kids on
the block to start using the upcoming release before others do.
The release tarballs are found at:
http://code.google.com/p/git-core/downloads/list
and their SHA-1 checksums are:

* [PATCH] Copy resolve_ref() return value for longer use
From: Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy @ 2011-11-08 2:30 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: git; +Cc: Junio C Hamano, Tony Wang, Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy
In-Reply-To: <CACsJy8Aw4_O_GMiK_D=HTENfxGUXTTzCHqM7FkriqU+mQtVWtA@mail.gmail.com>
resolve_ref() may return a pointer to a static buffer. Callers that
use this value outside of a block should copy the value to avoid some
hidden resolve_ref() call that may change the static buffer's value.
The bug found by Tony Wang <wwwjfy@gmail.com> in builtin/merge.c
demonstrates this. The first call is in cmd_merge()
branch = resolve_ref("HEAD", head_sha1, 0, &flag);
Then deep in lookup_commit_or_die() a few lines after, resolve_ref()
may be called again and destroy "branch".

Conflict markers come from the use of a 3-way merge, and if you were to do
a 3-way merge, by definition, you would need some way to tell where the
preimage of the patch and the target tree you are attempting to apply the
patch forked from. That's done by fall-back-3way in "am -3".
You _could_ lift that logic out of "am -3", but I do not think it is worth
the effort to do so (IOW, I do not see a reason to avoid "am -3").
If you do not want to create a commit for whatever reason, then you can
"reset --soft" back.

I tend to agree with the direction.
As we are not adding anything new before the 1.7.8 final, I'd rather ask
you to hold onto this and other changes in your footnote, instead of
having me to carry them in 'pu', which is an integration branch even less
official than it would otherwise be during the freeze period.

I'm dealing with two codebases that have branched in the past, before
any VCS was used, and now I'm tracking both separately with git. I'm
trying to apply changes from one to the other with format-patch and
git-am/apply. So yeah, no blob info.

Personally, I wouldn't object to having both "computable" conflicts, and
the .rej files for hunks that lack context, but I see how that would be
very confusing. :)

No, I don't think there's a way to do it now. I do find the conflict
markers the easiest way to mark something up. But most of my "git apply"
use is through "git am", which knows the trick of falling back to a
3-way merge (see fall_back_3way in git-am.sh).
If it's an actual git diff, the same 3-way trick will yield good
results, and it would be nice if it were easier to do that trick without
calling "git am". But if it's not a git diff (i.e., missing the original
blob information), then you won't be able to do that.
In the general case, you can't represent all failed hunks with conflict
markers, can you? I'm thinking something where we couldn't find any
relevant context. You know the lines from the original patch from the
hunk header, so you can drop the failed content from the patch in the
right spot. But how do you know how big a conflict marker to make for
the "current" side? The same number of lines as were in the hunk?
I think you'd end up with confusing conflict markers.

Actually, it needed to touch a few ugly corners of the code, so I just
went ahead and did it. The result is below.
-- >8 --
Subject: [PATCH] pretty: give placeholders to reflog identity
When doing a reflog walk, you can get some information about
the reflog (such as the subject line), but not the identity
information (i.e., name and email).
Let's make those available, mimicing the options for author
and committer identity.
Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net>
---
We're still missing date specifiers. However, if you specify a "--date"
flag, then the reflog selector ("%gd") will have the date inside the
curly braces instead of the reflog counter.
It would be a little nicer to provide explicit date placeholders, but we
can't quite make them match the author-date specifiers, because "gd" is
taken. We could add %gt, %gr, etc. But in the long run, I'd like to
move to considering most of %ar, %at, etc to be historical, and have
something like "%ad(short)" be the official way of picking different
date formats[1]. And then the reflog placeholders could learn
"%gt(short)". So making more reflog placeholders right now just feels
like cluttering a namespace I'd like to get changed eventually.
So I think in the meantime, this is a good start.
[1] I floated some patches about 8 months ago, and Will Palmer had some,
too. I really need to take a look at them and push the topic forward.

We trust p4 always returns a key "Owner", but it could
be an empty string? I'm okay with that, if that's how it works.
Should be "author in self.users"? I'm looking at the
creation of the committer string above, and guessing
that we try to use owner, and if that doesn't exist, try
to use author just like as above, so something like:
if owner:
if owner in self.users:
email = self.users[owner]
else:
email = "%s <a@b>" % owner
else:
if author in self.users:
email = self.users[author]
else:
email = "%s <a@b>" % author
I could misunderstand this.
Maybe that lookup in self.users[] and <a@b> default wants to
have a function since it will be repeated three times now.
Ack to the whole series.

No, automatic static analyzers will not help you avoid using an
uninitialized enum value here (well, I guess they could, but I don't
believe gcc or clang is nearly smart enough for that). The only
replacement for the check is (1) humans and (2) valgrind.
In this particular case, as you mentioned before, (1) seems to be
quite sufficient.

* git-apply that handles rejects like merge conflicts

Hey,
I'm trying to get git-apply to apply patches, and let me handle the
conflicts in a way I'm comfortable with -- by staging the "successful"
hunks and leaving conflict markers in the working tree.
With the available flags, I seem to only be able to have successful
hunks in the index, and rejected ones in patch-like .rej files.
Is there a way to accomplish this? If not, does anyone think it's a good
idea?

Yes, that's exactly the point, and my apologies if I was not clear enough.
I'll post again when I've finished the script and performed placed
