Actually I just looked closer at enter_repo() and it's not quite as simple as your proposed patch, because enter_repo() wants to concatenate suffixes like ".git". So either the malloced string would have to be copied to the static buffer again, or return a strbuf, or take an argument for allocating extra chars. Wow, I'd forgotten how much work it is to do string manipulation in C.
