I'm trying to design a theme, and I'm using a certain png file for both
desktop-image and GRUB_BACKGROUND. After I update-grub and reboot, I
get error: png: interlace method not supported.

Can someone explain to me what grub is objecting to?

I'm running Lubuntu 14.04.

(Hope this a good place to post this -- I didn't see a grub users lists,
only the devs list.)

Open the png in the Gimp and "export" (file menu) it to whatever.png.
You will be presented with a popup with "advanced options". Uncheck
"progressive" before clicking "Export".

If I understand the message correctly this should solve your problem.

Exporting to a png without interlacing solved the problem. Thanks for
the help!

Any time... As to your other dilemma, the closest you'll get to a "grub
users list" is:

  help-grub@gnu.org

I understand that's where you're supposed to ask questions that are not
clearly dev-related.
