I have noticed something strange on my Fedora 21 with i915. If I am
using something that utilizes vaapi, like VLC for instance, the screen
only refreshes on mouse movements.
This becomes abundantly clear when I watch the clock on my panel for
example, which displays seconds on it. It will sit at the same time and
not tick the seconds if I leave the mouse perfectly still. As soon as I
move the mouse the clock updates and will continue to update as long as
I keep the mouse moving.
I am sure you will want more information but I am not sure what to
gather. I am using the 3.18.7-200.fc21.x86_64 kernel. Just let me know
what other information you need and I will be happy to provide it.
Cheers,
b.

Definitely, currently we have no idea even what hardware you are
using... Could you please attach Xorg.0.log or whatever incompleteness
passes for that after journald?

Hrm. Not sure what this means. Hopefully the attachment suffices. If
you want any more info, happy to provide it.
Thanks much!

Mixing ZaphodHeads and DRI, you probably want to grab -intel-2.99.917 or
linux-4.0.

that I am seeing?
Hopefully RedHat will push an update to Fedora 21 for either of those
"real soon".
Cheers,

Oh wait! You said "mixing" not "missing". But yeah, I'm an old-timer

Is that really an either/or? If I were to just update
xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.99.916-3.20141117.fc21.x86_64 to 2.99.917 would
that solve the problem or do I also need the 4.0 kernel?

It's an OR. The bug I am thinking about has a w/a in the ddx and a real
fix in the kernel. Either one should do, and I think will resolve your
issue.

Yeah, upgrading to that newer Intel driver did seem to do the trick. I
wonder if it's making
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=463243 worse though
since that problem seems to have gotten worse with the new driver.
It didn't even really occur to me that that problem was related to my
GPU driver but I've since put the same version of Chrome on my laptop
with an nVidia Quadro and I have not see the same problem there (yet).
Cheers,
b.

Probably unrelated. Look in dmesg and /sys/class/drm/card0/error for
information we need to begin diagnosing the problem.

dmesg is pretty muddy right now as I still have drm.debug=6 set.

http://brian.interlinx.bc.ca/intel.debug.gz
as it is currently. Or is it more useful if it's collected right after
the Chrome UI hang?

It's only interesting after the hang :)

OK. Find the above URL refreshed with both dmesg (drm.debug=6)
and /sys/class/drm/card0/error included.

It's the Haswell GT1 context restore bug. It should be fixed in a stable
kernel near you (or 3.19 to be sure).
