Candidate for extraction to a helper function - to keep the body of the
loop shorter.
I would also do this above after the line which loads the buffer_size so
operations are logically together.
And a nitpick: spaces around arithmetic operators are standard -
checkpatch did not complain? Maybe it does only in strict mode?
