Also, lwn.net reports on this every kernel release, see those articles for details. Oh, and as a teaser, for the past year of releases, 2.6.36 - 3.1.0 (October 2010 to October 2011) there was 2889 different developers who got patches accepted into the Linux kernel codebase. greg k-h
