This made me curious, so I asked around. Apparently it stands for "Thomas,
Ingo, Peter" because it started out as a shared tree for Thomas Gleixner, Ingo
Molnar and Peter Anvin.
Today, it should really be called TIPPBD, because it's also shared with Peter
Zijlstra, Boris Petkov and Dave Hansen.

"Thomas" "Ingo" "Peter", the original maintainers of that tree (i.e. the
x86 maintainers tree, which has now grown to other people and other
parts of the kernel.)
thanks,

Interesting!
If anyone else stumbles upon the 'TIP' acronym in future, it might be
helpful to add it to the Kernel Glossary[1]. I would appreciate hearing
the community's thoughts on this idea.

Or edit the description to describe the current purpose of this repo?
Unnamed repository; edit this file 'description' to name the repository.
