I want to be a kernel tester. do I just need to download the latest testing
kernel and run it, and report if I come across any errors? or should I be
checking for certain things?

A good start would be to download [1] and compiling the latest mainline
kernel source(s).
Inside is a Documentation folder. Thats not to mention kernelnewbies.org
