Hi everyone,
I’m Samiksha (a.k.a. Shdwcodr), an undergrad BCA student from India with a
relentless drive to get deep into the Linux kernel. I've recently begun my
journey contributing to the kernel, focusing on staging drivers, learning
the kernel development workflow, and understanding the culture of patch
submission and review.
Over the past few days, I’ve:
- Set up a local kernel build and testing workflow.
- Sent out my first real patch (not a dummy), with more lined up.
- Subscribed to key mailing lists and joined IRC channels to stay in the
loop.
- Started tracking patch feedback and diving into `scripts/checkpatch.pl`,
git send-email, and the entire mailing list-based workflow.
My short-term goal is to get multiple patches accepted into staging by
early 2025, and long-term I’m aiming for the **LFX Kernel Mentorship
Program in 2026**.
I’ll be lurking, learning, and asking questions when stuck. Thanks in
advance to everyone who shares knowledge and guidance — it means a lot to
newcomers like me.
Looking forward to learning from you all and giving back as I grow.
Cheers,
Samiksha (Shdwcodr)

He's right tho. It's annoying, when you can't even edit out the parts "AI" told you to. How lazy can you be?

Harsh feedback is alright but shouldn't we be padding it with a bit
more encouragement? Also everyone here seems to have an opinion but
some participants in this thread haven't even configured their email
clients to send plaintext mail. https://useplaintext.email/

I agree, e-mail guidelines should be the first thing to look into.

This thread is just begging for an "Angry Nerds" reference, isn't
it?

Ezra, you're by far not the worst one nor the only one so this is not
directed at you personally, but I would still like to take this opportunity
to point out something in general:
This is a newbie mailing list, specifically named "kernelnewbies", where
"stupid" questions should be allowed to be asked. If someone thinks the
question is annoying, obvious or otherwise unworthy, they are free to use
their mental filter and ignore it, or to unsubscribe from the list. If you
don't have something friendly or helpful to say, then hold your tongue. No
need for berating, or long rants about how wrong someone is or how little
they know. We are here to learn.
I think we've come far as a community since the old days where a rough-up
was common as an initiation rite, and even the old-timers are trying to
give level feedback these days. There is no need for public humiliation -
the bar is already high to learn the topic, even to venture into the lists,
and to even want to participate or contribute in a community that isn't
exactly well known for its open arms.
