This mailing list is flooo-oooded with SPAM. I don't want to make
aggressive settings of my GMail, because if I do, it will filter good
emails too.
Anyways, this MUST be solved at the mailing list level.
Few technologies allow Linuxoids (The OSS community) to stop spam COMPLETELY.
We should adapt them.
1. Only subscribed members may post.
2. Subscription requires image-recognition.
3. Only text may be sent. HTML and Attachments dropped automatically.
4. Spamming member automatically gets unsubscribed.
Aggressive Linuxoids also do:
1. Require image-recognition per EVERY email sent to mailing-list.
(this will prevent automatic emailing viruses, who attack address
books, from spreading, because the email server will send confirmation
email to the client, that will require sender to recognize-image to
really post emails)

NAK. The list should be open for everyone to report bugs; bug
reporters are doing a favor to us ("developers"), so it shouldn't be
made harder for them (otherwise the user may be pissed off and go away
- been there, done that).

Hum, maybe allow text/plain for patches?

Wow, that would really annoy a lot of people (especially the devs who
do a lot of posting); IMHO the value of a bug report is higher that
the annoyance of a bit of SPAM. Some automated anti-spam is good of
course, but that doesn't save you from running a local SPAM filter.
FWIW GMail spam filter catches almost all the spam on this list,
spamassassin on my machine does the rest.

The lists on vger have almost no spam these days and they remain
open to non-subscribers. What they did is install greylisting on
the mail server. It works very well...so far.

[HN] Agreed with 1 & 2.

[HN] re: attachments; what if someone posts a patch for review prior
to submission? What if a valid member includes digital signature?
> 4. Spamming member automatically gets unsubscribed.
[HN] Agreed _iff_ it could be asserted. Difficult to do and will
create hassles to valid members, ultimately resulting in lower
contribution.

[HN] This seems harsh and really cumbersome. I agree with you and feel
the same frustration; spam is a serious problem (or else Monthys
wouldn't go "spam spam spam.." 8-) ) This approach is bound to fail.
The problem is, it puts the burden of vigilance only on victims. The
MX is the right place to start, and could filter a reasonable amount
of spams.
