What are the command-line options necessary to get the guest devices

For network you use '-net nic, model=virtio',
I hope to write a wiki page for it tomorrow.

Great, thanks. How does block devices work? Can they work with a QEMU
virtual disk? I look forward to the wiki.

Cheers,
Cam

Pardon my impatience, but in the guest rhel5 (with rusty's patches) the
ethernet card is not detected. What type of card will a virtio card
