Starting the guest in bridged mode with: qemu-system-x86_64 xp.img -usb -usbdevice tablet -monitor stdio -m 512 \ -net nic,vlan=0 -net tap,vlan=0,ifname=tap0,script=/etc/qemu-ifup seems to work fast and stable so far.
