Steve, thank you for finding this bug.
Is there a chance you could test without vhost but with the event_idx=off ?
This is the xml line in case you use libvirt:

<interface .......
   <driver name="qemu" event_idx="off"/>
</interface>

That would be an effective workaround until we get a fixed qemu.
